Hello Comanche family,
I just wanted to share my recent panel upgrade. I’m not trying to sell you anything, I’m just sharing what I did with my Comanche. I bought my PA-24 6 months ago and have been working on it for all these upgrades for the last 3 months. I know you are going to be curious about how much money it truly takes to make a Comanche new again, so here are the figures.

$22,000 New paint and leather interior
$75,000 Latest avionics upgrades including new instrument panel.
$3,000 Replace 35 amp generator with 70 amp alternator, single piece windshield, and do a few speed mods.
$45,000 Cost of the airplane when purchased. 2900 TT 600 SMOH.
Grand total about 145,000

Sweet.
Once we get all the bugs worked out of mine, I’ll be sharing.

Very nice! Who did the panel work? Ron and Jon’s?

Thanks. I didn’t say who did the work because I didn’t join the ICS to self promote. I’m just sharing my experiences. I did all the work, that’s what I do for a living. I have an avionics shop with a CNC machine that custom cuts panels. Yesterday I added a new modern glare shield that makes it look so much better. I will try to post a picture today.

That is one beautiful panel!! Great work!!

I have to ask, where did you find the glare shield?

    Looks good. Two questions

    1) why did you go with the remote mounted audio panel but a panel mount transponder?
    2) Is the 75k just the parts or is that a reasonable estimate including installation cost?

    1. Below the transponder are control cables making that space unusable. The GTN-750 has a space right behind the display for their audio panel so it makes it real easy to mount. I could have also remote mounted a GTX-345R instead of the panel mount GTX-345. Too many things relying on the GTN-750 is probably not a good idea.

    2. $75K includes parts and labor. GMA-35C audio panel, GTN-750 WAAS GPS/NAV/COMM, GNC-255a NAV/COMM, G500TXi, GEA-110 engine monitor with all available probes including carb ice (temp) sensor, synthetic vision option, G5 backup EFIS, new instrument panel, Flight Stream 510, all new circuit breakers relocated to easy to access panel location. I valued the S-Tec autopilot at $10K. The S-Tec system 50 is around $17K installed originally. I will be putting in a new GFC-500 autopilot as soon as they are STC’d. Which should be less than a year from now. The cost of that installed is around $13K. That would then bring the grand total to high 70’s.

If you would like to see the invoice for an actual break down I can post it.

I have a unique panel board and going full glass this winter and would like to keep the wood grain, just not sure how. Not sure who originally made it. Any thoughts?

I am also not sure how to upload the picture for you guys to see.

    John,

Thanks for sharing the information. I’m a prospective Comanche owner and constantly struggle to understand how much panel work costs. I either look for an airplane that has already been upgraded (at a steep price) or look for a bare-bones, unimproved original and pay the $$$ to get it configured precisely the way I want. Option two is the more expensive route. Even still, not too sure I would go quite so far as you did. My goal is a pair of G5’s (or Aspen PFD), Avidyne 540/Garmin750, Solid autopilot (coupled approaches), Engine analyzer, decent audio panel all on a modern-looking panel like you have. I don’t “think” I need to spend $75k for all that do I? Hoping I can find a plane that has one or more of these.
    Thanks again for the datapoint.

    Hi David,
It is always cheaper to get an airplane that is already equipped. But then you usually can’t get “exactly” what you want. To give you some idea of what it would cost for your particular package see below:

    G5 ADI $3000 installed
    G5 HSI (G5, GAD-29B, GMU-11) $6,300 installed
    Aspen E5 $8500 installed
    GTN-750 $16,950 installed
    IFD-540 $15,200 installed
