Piper Autocontrol III

Postby Joachim Gruber » Mon Jan 09, 2017 2:52 am

I'm looking at this plane and it has a "Piper Autocontrol III" installed. I believe that this is the same as a Century II. However, when I compare the Autocontrol III panel (see photo below) to those depicted in a Century autopilot manual, it seems to match the Century IIB (just from the looks of it: Dial in the center with a button on each side). Can someone help me and explain the Autocontrol-Century equivalents, and let me know which one is in the photo below (yellow outline)? How many axes does it have?
Thanks.

I believe that the Autocontrol III and the Century II are equivalent.
I believe that the Autocontrol IIIB and the Century IIB are equivalent.

The difference between the two are that the "B" models have a rocker switch to engage the autopilot which is held on by an electromagnet. This wires to the button on the yoke for A/P disconnect.

I have the same auto pilot (inop currently) but it is single axis.

Re: Piper Autocontrol IIIB-1

Just read the discussion on the Piper AP comparison from the Century AP. Just for an education exercise, did Century make Piper's ALTIMATIC IIIB-1? Did piper sell their system to Century or did Century split from Altimatic and form their own Company like I was told Stec folks did.

Secondly, I have an Altimatic IIIB-1 and it does not have the disconnect on my piper yoke? I looked for one but did not find it. Looking at the instrument I see a on off white plastic rocker switch for roll. A marked altitude dial with a circular knob left down and right up. The engaging of the AP two left and right mid upper top plastic square push buttons.

We looked for the cut-off switch to disengage the AP but did not find one. The heading bug is on the DG and the AP is slave to the KLN 94 GPS map. The Altimatic works exception well much to my surprise. The aircraft is a 68 B model.

What's your thoughts………...
