JPI 930 Mounting Location
Reading through the 930 installation manual it states a maximum distance between the flight instruments and the EDM of 21 inches. On the Comanche with the EDM on the right hand side the measurement is 25 inches.
For those who have installed the 930 on the right hand side how did you get around this issue?

Does it mention anything in the manuel about the RAD or "remote auxiliary display" in regards to placement of the unit? My unit is on the right however I have the RAD display over on the left by the flight instruments. It gives you engine RPM and MP and flashes any warnings like low oil pressure. I have not read the manuel just guessing. I know the RAD is required to be in the flight instrument area in front of the pilot.

From the install manual:-
"The EDM display may be mounted from the vertical centreline of the primary flight instrument "T" to a maximum of 21" to the further most gauge of the EDM display..."
It also says the RAD must be mounted directly in front of the pilot.
It continues:-
"The installing A&P and AI must insure that the installation location complies with the viewing angle requirements listed above"
Seems very limiting and I hope there is a way around this.

Interesting. I will measure mine and see what I come up with. I know when I had mine installed, the shop had to get an FAA Designated Engineer to approve the new panel layout and design. My take is that when companies like JPI have to go through the FAA approval process they come up with a lot of arbitrary and meaningless numbers and data in an effort to improve saftey. I guess it doesn't matter tht the original gauges don't meet this requirement either. Unfortunately,due to avionics and flight instruments changing so fast, integration on the GA side is very poor. I would check with some avionics shops and see what their experience has been.

Very helpful given that I already have had the panels cut in accordance with the older versions of the installation manual which make no mention of any maximum distances.
Mark, I suspect your EDM will be 25+ inches away from the centre of your primary flight instruments...
It basically rules out the 930 for intstallation in the right side panel.

From reading the installation Manuel's online it looks like this 21 inch rule was added in the 2-22-2009 manuel. The 2008 Manuel just says it should be mounted as close as possible to the pilots flight instruments. Don't know what say?

Reading it more closely it says that:-
"The display is best located within the natural scan and easy reach of the pilot. The recommended mounting location is defined as the distance from the vertical centerline of the Primary Flight Instruments to the outer edge of the further most gauge displayed on the EDM."
It then goes on to define what the recommended position is (ie 21 inches). I'm no lawyer but they do use the word 'recommended' and not 'required'.
It is very badly worded but it could be taken to mean that the viewing angle requirement that the A&P 'must' comply with is "within the natural scan and easy reach of the pilot" and the 'recommended' location to achieve this is 21 inches.
Looking for the loophole. What are your thoughts?

That is the way I would interprut that also. I would put it where you want it. The engine monitor has nothing to do with controlling the airplane when things go bad. I would rather have back up flight instruments, CDI's and moving maps closer to me than this box. Anything that will help keep the greasy side down and offer more situational awareness, that's what I want close to me. Once it is installed, it will never be mentioned again.
