I just read that Garmin has certified their G3X. This would be a fantastic upgrade for my 1961 250 Comanche. Does anyone know if the existing panel will fit a G3X?

I have a G500TXi in mine so it should fit just fine. Especially if you do the engine monitoring as well.

John, which model of G500TXi do you have? (And in which sort of Comanche?) The Portrait version would suit my needs well, but lt looks like a tight fit at best. (I have a PA24-250).

John, is there a way of posting a picture of your panel?

Robert: The G500TXi portrait 7 inch version is the same height as the 10 inch that I have, it is just about half as wide. I have a 180 but it is the same panel as the 250. It will fit.

The G3X screen is not the same size. I can post the specs if you need it

Brad: my panel is listed in this forum under “ultimate avionics upgrade”.

John, That truly is a beautiful Panel.
What are you thoughts on the G3X vs The G500. To be honest what my
plan was before the G3X got certified was this year adding Dual G5’s while
I anxiously await the G500 to be certified for the Comanche.

This would in my opinion be great bang for the buck. However now the G3X is here
I am second guessing the dual G5’s.

    Brad,
That’s a tough one. I love my G500TXi but for most people the G3X or G5’s will be the more practical way to go. The G5 ADI and HSI pair should cost you about $9K installed. The G3X should cost about $10,300 installed. The problem with going the preferred route is the extras you will incur with the G3X. Replacing the pilot’s and co-pilot’s panel like mine will cost an extra $2K. Adding a G5 backup so that you can remove the vacuum system and also remove the otherwise required airspeed/Altimeter/ADI will cost you another $3K.It’s worth the extra money but is it in the budget?

Keep in mind I’m referring the the base G3X verses the G5 pair. If you add engine monitoring to the G3X that adds more.

Please, please go here and show your interest so Garmin will start the STC on the Comanche series!

    John,

    All good points to consider.
If someone went with the dual 7″ G3X’s does that take away the necessity for the back up G5.
Seems to me that the second G3X would be the back up for everything. Also it gets the engine monitoring off of the primary screen.
Something else to ponder. I have registered with Garmin GFC500. (probably more than once)

    Brad,
This is one of the differences between the G500 TXi and the G3X. There is no G3X solution for no backups. That is to say 2 screens of any size will not alleviate the need for a backup. You will need the G5 ADI or all 3 normal backups. Altimeter, Airspeed and vacuum driven ADI.

This is what the manual says:
Backup instruments for a G3X PFD installation may be either a G5 ADI or pneumatic instruments
(vacuum AI, airspeed indicator, altimeter). If GFC500 is installed with a G3X PFD, a G5 is not required if
    a Sonalert is installed.

There is always more than what you see in the sales brochures.
Thank you for the incredible information. The last piece of the puzzle is:
if you install a pair of G5’s do you also need steam back up or are they each others back up?

    Brad.

    Brad,
No backup needed to the G5 pair.
