I was out flying the other day and when I was about 10 miles out from the airport my com portion of the 430
didn't work. Meaning I couldn't receive on it or transmit. The nav portion and gps was fine. Used number 2 radio and after I was within 5 miles
out tried the garmin again and it was 5 by 5.

Today same thing. Just wondering if anybody else has had this problem with the 430.
Tomorrow I will switch the antenae from com 2 to the garmin and see if that helps.
The unit was recently reracked from storage so will take it out and rerack it again. All the grounds look secure

The unit when it is working is 5 by 5 no static, no fade.
The unit is only 18 months old and still under warranty, but if there is a simple solution that I am missing would appreciate any
hints.

we also have the 430 w, 61 250.We have had complaints from atc on very very very rare occasions from atc about garbled comm. Switched freq to next sector 5x5. We believe it to be either freq specific, or perhaps ant interference/angle/ sun spots/gremlins. Probaly has happened 5 times in five years

Thanks Andrew. I will check the box on a diff frequency as well.. both times was on the same tower frequency.
I will also keep the unit dry.... other wise the gremlins might multiply or turn ugly.

Just got back from the hangar. It was indeed an antennae problem. When I switched the cables around the
problem migrated to the number 2 set. Started looking in the rear equipment area first as I have recently had a new 406 elt
installed. Didn't have to look far before finding a coax cable cut almost entirely through, not sure when it was cut but the
nice neat tying of the wire bundles caused the cut to open up and twist enough for the center conductor to separate.

Need a way to splice the cable and then should be good to go. I am a little amazed that the garmin actually had a range of 5 to 10 miles without an antenae!

Anyway problem solved.
