Ruy,

I am also ready to get an engine monitor and wondering if anyone has a preference or recommendation. I would like to tie into my 430 for another fuel gauge backup and planning. Anxious to see your replies.

Hi,

As a point of comparison I installed a JPI 930 in my -180 recently.

I like the way it functions but it was not without its teething problems. The problems were not the fault of the unit per Se but the installation is very critical. The build quality of the unit seems a bit light weight to me and only time will tell whether it stands up to the rigours of usage. Lastly, the four mounting screws are TINY and only engage with 3 or 4 threads max. The kicker is that if you over tighten (even slightly) and bottom out the screw it will crack the screen. I made up an additional support bracket. It hasn't fallen out... yet.

All in all I am pleased that I installed the JPI. Now that it is working properly it does everything I want it to do and tidied up the panel a lot.

The JPI uses the existing aircraft resistive fuel level sensors but with new wiring. They say to get the sensors reconditioned before install and that is probably good advice. At the end of the day it is still a GA quality system not an airline/military quality system...

Cheers,

James.

P.S. It is connected to my CNX 80 as well.

I installed JPIs in each of my last 2 aircraft... both the single and the twin. In my opinion they are a "very high want". Yes, you have to be careful on the length of screw... my avionics shop cracked one by using screws that were too long. However, having resolved that they have been very reliable devices.

All the best!
Jim

I've been happy with JPI 7604C in the twin since 2005 - moved it in 2007 when we re-did the panel and moved it just to the left of the center radio stack to make it more readily in the pilot scan. Added the oil temp feature and had some early problems due to install of probes. Reminds me, the shop took out the factory CHT probes which is no-no unless the unit is STC'd to act as primary gauge.

We use Shadin for fuel qty and flow - it is STC'd to act as primary by Osborne. It ties to the GPS - very nice set-up so engine monitor is not required for this function.
