ARTEX ME 406 ELT

Postby John Wedge » Tue Sep 20, 2011 1:00 am

Anyone with one of these interfaced to Garmin 430? Good, bad or ugly installation, quality or usage experience comments appreciated. Old Pointer unit has croaked.
Thanks.

I have the Artex ME 406 and a 530. I do not know if mine is interfaced ? I was unaware of an interface to the GPS? What does this do for you? How would I know? I have not had any trouble with mine that I know of. I did a complete new panel and everything was installed at the same time by a shop.

Hi John,

Yes they can be interfaced. What it does is to provide a gps location as part of the emergency broadcast so that the mission becomes one of rescue as opposed to search and rescue.

Good luck, Don

Mark, from what I find on Spruce site there are two interface units, $225 or $285, that can be added / connected to GPS and as Don stated it will then add your location and ID info to the ELT broadcast.

John,

Thanks for the education on the 406 capabilities. I had the misconception that the 406 pinpointed your location autonomously. As I understand it now the 406 by itself uses the satellite system to triangulate your location that according to the PDF link below from Artex is only accurate to a 28 KM circle. Which is a huge improvement over the 121.5 system. Although when interfaced to a GPS it looks like it is accurate to about 10 meters. I am in the process of getting a price on the installation of this adapter. I think this would be well worth the money if you ever needed it.

I forgot to say go to page # 5 of this PDF it has a really good illistration about the accuracy of the 3 systems: 121.5, 406 stand alone and the 406 interfaced. The 121.5 is a search area 1260KM.

I agree with you. I was thinking today about how little a couple of hundred dollars would be if I was down somewhere with a broken leg or couple of ribs and needed help. Hopefully neither of us will ever need to use that ELT.
