696 to 430

Postby Bryan Burnette » Thu Oct 25, 2012 2:46 pm

I have a PA30 w/ two Garmin 430's. I also have a 696. Is there anyway to program a flight plan into the 696 and then download it to the 430?

Thanks,
I wish you guys would have told be about Comanches years ago. I might not have been flying Cessnas all these years.

Bryan,

I haven't done it and don't own those machines but do have a couple of tips from operating 530W to 496. Since the interface is an RS232, there should be common elements.

The 430 should have a page where you specific crossfill for the interface.
On another page there is a place to specific manual or auto crossfill. We use auto.

We program at the 530 and let it crossfill to the 496. Since the function is named crossfill, I'm guessing but only guessing because I haven't done it that if the 696 has got a program active it will crossfill to the 430. I'll be interested to hear if this works this way.

The avionics shop set this up for us so there is a connection between the two.

Hope this helps a bit.

Pat

Yes it does help. I now have a start to my path. Sounds like I may need a cable and port installed to do this.

Thank you.

You cannot crossfill from the portable units to the panel mounts (by certification), but you can crossfill from the panel mounts to the portables, or to another panel mount. The interface is through the power/data cable to the 696. Contact your local avionics tech for the details on the wiring. Hope this helps.

Yes it does help. Thank you.

I guess everyone just programs their flight plan while sitting in the plane. I guess it doesn't take that long if it is figured out before hand.

You need a serial output from the 430 configured for "aviation" and that will stream the information you need for the flightplan. Serial out puts available on 78 pin connector pins 58 port 2 and pin 56 port . If you have a fuel flow or some other device that take aviation output from the 430, then connect in parallel to that.

This done, the 696 has a serial input which you connect to.
