Ok here goes I’ve been looking at changing the engine to an IO540-C1B5 with an eagle cowling. Looking at the. type certificate this is an approved replacment engine. Anyone know where I can get piper drawing 23144? Also TCDS did not have any mention of on-board O2 systems? Anyone know if there is an STC on this? Next I’m looking for this piper kit 760-747 on the tail, anyone have information on this? Ive seen the stab tip updates from aftermarket companies but surly there is more to this update than just tips?? Lastly Im looking for a right side trim tab (or drawing) to replace mine which has seen better day’s. I would prefer to re-skin it but would like some good tech data…

    Thanks Keep Safe

    Sam,

Have you contacted Piper or Webco regarding drawing 23144?

Re: O2, the TCDS does list O2 under item 609. It only applies to the -400 and the -260 though. Most people use the portable style if they don’t have an installed system.

You can give Webco a call re: Piper kit 760-747. If anyone has one or can provide ideas it would be Webco.

Re: the right side trim tab, I assume you asking about the right side of the stabilator trim tab. Again, try Webco or Piper. For the re-skinning option, Webco might have the skins. There are shops that have jigs to do re-skinning properly. We have used Royal Aircraft at Hagerstown, MD to re-skin our right aileron with a skin we bought from Webco.

I am no A&P and am mostly parroting what I’ve read or experienced personally. You might want to try asking again on the Airworthy Comanche Delphi Forum or the FB Piper Comanche group. Unfortunately, many of the more experienced people would have answered this in the past are no longer members but lurk in the two sites listed.

    Best of luck,

    Sam:

There are still a few of us around. Michael’s advice is on point regarding the drawing. The stabilator tip and rudder tip balance weight kits are sometimes available as old stock but you need to use the services of a few part finders. These are generally by subscription so only the larger FBO or AMO generally have access to these. You can sometimes find parts on old aircraft being parted out however, but you will likely be missing the kits and such required. The items you have seen online at places like knots-2-u are only the fiberglass covers.

It may be more cost effective to purchase an aircraft with the options you want already installed. Embarking on an engine swap and structural upgrades is not for the faint of heart or easily discouraged and I applaud you for taking it on.

Reskinning can be accomplished (in Canada) by an AMO with a structural endorsement – they will know what to do and how to acquire the skins. If they don’t you are talking to the wrong people in any case.

The other sources of information mentioned are also very good. Please also submit a technical query at the ICS website as that is sent to several people who may be able to assist you as well.

    William
