I own a 65 260 with a Hartzell 2-blade aluminum prop. I am considering an upgrade to a 3-blade, primarily because an overhaul is due soon and I read that performance and noise improvements can be had. Does anyone have comparative data between these two options? Best,
There are several options but the basic premise is that the three bladed prop gives better climb performance and a little less noise (blades are shorter so the tips don't go as fast at takeoff) but you lose some cruise speed over a two bladed prop.
Your header mentions MT versus Top Prop. MT is a wood prop with a composite overlay. The claims that MT makes are optimistic but the MT does not suffer damage well.
I want you to contact Johnston Aircraft in Tulare, California. Phone is (559) 686.1794. Dave Johnston is the owner. They have STCs for the 260 Comanche for a high performance propeller. This will give you the best cruise performance of any of the offerings from Hartzell, McCauley, MT etc. Speak to Dave Johnston and get the numbers. If I was seeking a new propeller I would go with their prop since it has an improved twist in the blades that take a more aggressive bite and gives high cruise thrust.
