Safety Wire on Cylinder Base Hold-down Nuts

Postby N388LB » Tue Sep 23, 2014 12:40 pm

My Twin Comanche (IO-320B) engines differ in the safety wire used on the cylinder hold-down nuts. Both engines were relatively recently overhauled. On the Left, three cylinders have safety wire around the hold-down nuts. But the R engine only has one with safety wire. I cannot find any Lycoming documentation (nor did I get a response to my call to the service rep) that says to use (and if so when) safety wire on the base nuts. I've looked at other PA-30s and they all seem to have differences. Can anyone give me a vector? Thanks!

I have never seen those nuts safetied before. My guess is that if the nuts become loose, the safety wire will do nothing. My guess would be that the hammering of the cylinders would break the studs so there is no real value in safety wiring the cylinder hold-down nuts. Who overhauled the engines?

No safety wires in this area for two sets of engines and 2 different overhaulers.

Kristin and Pat,
Thank you for the quick replies and letting me know I'm not missing some well known (but not to me) Comanche guidance.
