Propeller Overhaul

Postby Kristofer Duckett » Tue Sep 08, 2015 12:25 am

All,

I am due (overdue) for a prop overhaul. Has anyone used Air Prop Specialists in Marianna, FL?

How much should I expect for a typical overhaul, I have a McCauley B3D32C412-C. An IRAN doesn't reset the times correct? How do most shops get this does, do you need to fly your aircraft there, will they come to get it, who removes/installs the prop? Has anyone used aircraft Mx schools for discounts? Thanks all!

Kristofer,
Prop overhauls are overrated in my opinion. Resetting time only matters if you have a reason to do so. Doing an IRAN service is most often called an inspect and reseal. In FL the biggest danger to a prop is corrosion. Barring that, the Mac prop is pretty simple and if the blades are in good shape, not much else really goes wrong. Most shops will charge $3500-$4000 for an overhaul, and about half of that for an inspect and reseal. If the shop is at an airport they may have removal/install service. If it is not, they may come pick it up from your location if you are not too far away. Those are questions for your shop and may factor in your choice of one over another. The prop does fit nicely in the back of a full size pickup if you need to transport it yourself.
