PA30 Ignition (mag) system

Postby Michael Bronzburg » Sun Jul 22, 2012 3:37 pm

I've got to overhaul or replace my mags this year during my annual. What would ya'll recommend . I have stock Bendix mags.
Lasar, EFII system, slick mags, I'm looking for cost effective, and longevity, I've got time to make a decision not due until Jan.
I'm looking for pro's and con's for the different systems. All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Michael,

Welcome to the Forum. I've been happy with Slick mags since 2004.

Zach Grant has installed an ElectroAir electronic ignition on his 180 and it is showing some pretty impressive numbers. I see you have the Lasar and I understand that it is becoming an orphan. But these guys thought that they would have STC approval for the twins by Oshkosh...

All the best!

If they work fine and you only fly Part 91, you don't have to do either. Just have an IRAN and adjustment performed at next annual.

Mike Busch of the Savvy Aviator is a strong advocate in now throwing away perfectly good magnetos or alternators just because they've hit a magical number, provided you aren't flying for hire. There are some excellent videos from him on EAA's website.
