OIL TEMP VERY HIGH

ON CLIMB OUT THE OIL TEMP WILL GO RED AND LOSE PRESSURE IF YOU DO NOT WATCH IT. I TURN IT OVER BETWEEN BEFORE TILT AND I WILL EVENTUALLY ALMOST GO TO NORMAL. I WORKED MY WAY TO 13000 THE OTHER DAY AND IT NEVER GOT TO NORMAL TEMP. NOT HIGH, BUT NOT NORMAL FOR 60 DEGREE WEATHER. THIS IS A "NEW" THING AND HAS BEEN ON GOING SINCE EARLY SPRING HAD A BIRDS NEST I GOT OUT, BUT THEN WHEN THAT DIDN'T CURE IT, HAD THE COWL REMOVED AND A COMPLETE CLEANING AND BLOWING OUT. SAME PROBLEM. I KEEP THE OIL AT 9 MIN AND TEN QT WHEN GOING ON A LONG TRIP. ALL THE SIMPLE STUFF HAS BEEN CHECKED. I JUST DON'T THINK THE OIL COOLER IS WORKING PROPERLY. ALSO I WAS TOLD ABOUT SOMETHING ABOUT A TRANSDUCER ??? IN THE OIL CIRCUIT THAT DIVERTS OIL FROM THE COOLER IN COLD WEATHER AND IT MIGHT BE STUCK OPEN-CLOSED. SHORT LOW TRIPS, YOU CAN LIVE WITH IT. BUT ON LONG HIGH ONES, TROUBLE AWAITS ME AND I AM TIRED OF IT. ANY IDEAS.

Sanford,

On my twin there is a vernitherm that was replaced during last engine overhauls and it controls when the oil cooler functions. It was fairly easy for the mechanic to check when I had a similar question. The twin oil cooler was relatively cheap to replace - if you think that's the problem -iirc $300 but it has been awhile and singles may be very different. My suggestion would be to check the vernitherm or equivalent first.

THANKS, AT LEAST I KNOW WHAT I WANT. AM GOING TO REPLACE IT THEN GO TO THE COOLER NEXT. THIS CAN BE VERY NERVE WRACKING IN CLASS B AIRSPACE. THEY DON'T TAKE KINDLY TO REJECTING A CLIMB. I LOOKED IN THE PIPER TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE AND IT WAS NO HELP. THANKS

others more knowledgeable than me will speak up, Zach that means you, but here's what we have. This on a 61 250. Oil temp runs to about 220 on a hot day, settles at 190 to 200 during cruise. 120 -130 mph indicated in the climb. This when oat is 80 +. Ok, we've done the vernatherm thing,new oil cooler and checked the sender unit. First I would check your instumentation. Take the probe and heat up some oil in a small container, use a cooking thermometer and check to see it it's accurate. Next try having you A&P fabricate a small scoop to direct more air into the oil cooler. This was a cheap fix, and somewhat effective. It could also be exseesive blowby gases, this can be checked by your a&p. They hook up a airspped indicator to the oil filler neck and check the pressuration of the case. Oil collers are fairly inexpensive. Hope this helps, and best of luck

Check the gage first, put the sending unit in boiling water, that's the easiest. (You can throw the thermostat in the boiling water to and see if it moves) Also, if the oil is really getting that hot it will smell burnt on the dip stick. My '60 250 would get just past the 200 degree mark on a hot day climb out. But after I refurbished all the baffles it's never gone beyond 200 even in this summers Oklahoma heat.-----On another note, you might try having the oil cooler cleaned out before purchasing a new one.

THANKS FOR THE INPUT.. HAVE DONE THE BAFFELS THAT WAS MY FIRST THOUGHT. AM NOW GOING TO START CHASING THE DOG AGAIN. ONLY PROBLEM IS IT GETS EXPENSIVE.

In our family, we view owning an airplane as being similar to owning a second home - there's always something to fix or improve and in between, you get to enjoy the heck out of it.

FYI,

In regards to high oil temps.

I just saw a new product from Airwolf Filters Inc. called an "OIL CHILLER". It has a advertised price of $150.00.

According to the web site it is simular to a computer heat sink. It has fins and wraps around the oil filter. It is a new product just launched at Oshkosh this year. I don't know anything else about it. I have one on order from Aircraft Spruce, they have a 4-8 week delivery date. It looks interesting. FWIW.

Sounds like an old idea being brought back to life. I had one of similar design on my home built 40 years ago and as I recall Pep Boys sold one for auto's in the 50's and 60's. Ray B

A "new" problem like this of high oil temps and low oil press almost always has to do with an internal engine problem. I would cut your oil filter and see what might be lurking there if all of the gauges check out and the vernatherm is determined to be working. Another issue may be the oil cooler itself. Remove it and have it flushed. You would be surprised as to what nasty stuff gets caught in there.
