magneto wire harness

Postby Tim Eason » Wed Feb 12, 2014 12:31 am

I was shipped the wrong wire harness from Aircraft Spruce for a Bendix mag. Before I send it back I was wondering if anyone with a PA-30 had used or was using a Harness with 90 degree metal bends at the plug with RH style plugs. The cowls are off right now and I suspect the fit with the cowls on may be tight or not fit at all. If anyone knows the answer please let me know. Thanks.

Tim,

I tried to get the 90 degree bend ones and failed in 2009 due to lead time. There's been some articles about a take-over and long lead times to get them now but I can't recall all the details because it is not on my to-do list right now. The others do work. If you see any rubs on the cowls, teflon tape is a wonder at previewing cowl wear.

Pat,

Thanks for the answer. The lead time from Aircraft Spruce is about 2 weeks. They were actually made by Kelly Aerospace. I had ordered a harness for REM plugs. They sent me a harness for the RH plug. It is a quality harness but the RH plug is a 1/4-1/2 in taller than the REM plug and the clearance appears to be very tight for the wires on the top plugs. Have you actually seen them used on PA-30's

I talked with Clifton Aero this afternoon and they seem to be a wealth of knowledge about all things comanche. I explained my situation to Tim at Cliffton and he thought the wire harness might work although it would be snug.I spent the afternoon putting the harness on the right engine with some borrowed RHB plugs and then putting all the cowlings back on. It is a snug fit but nothing seems to be rubbing. So far so good. Took the cowlings off and am waiting on new plugs to finish the job. The harness came from Kelley Aerospace through Aircraft Spruce. The harness is very well made and is a custom fit for any engine you may desire. The 90 degree metal radius at the plug makes for a nice installation. Top plugs are a close fit. Bottom plugs are no sweat. Lead time from order to delivery was about 2 weeks.

Tim,

Glad you got some help. Clifton is the shop I use and am very happy with them.
