Koolmat for the firewall
Folks, I really like almost everything about my PA24-250...except flying it in really warm weather. I'm wondering if any of you have experience with Matt Kirk's Koolmat and cam tell me from your personal experience if hot summer flying is significantly cooler when it's installed? The Comanche does great in the coldest winter conditions, but we tend not to fly it as much when it's bitterly cold. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I have not had any experience with the Koolmat, but I can tell you two things. One, it can only improve the situation, and two, the culprit is the muffler and shroud that lays behind the engine next to the firewall. If you really want some relief from the heat, change the exhaust system to dual exhausts. That takes the muffler out of the proximity of the firewall. Dave Pratt sells an STC'd muffler system for the 250. It's light years ahead and better than the existing system.

Thanks for the thoughts, Dave. Unfortunately I can't affort $4,000 plus labor for a new exhaust system since mine is in perfrect condition. I can't tell from Pratt's web site if a new cowling is also required, but if so, I'll never be able to afford it!

A new cowl is not required. Someday, when you're present exhaust system is in need of repair, take a close look at the newer style (if it's still available). At that point you will only be looking at the difference in cost of repair versus replacement. It may be more affordable then. Meanwhile, looks like the Koolmat is your best option.
