Vne Speeds

Postby 17031 » Sun Jul 25, 2010 3:49 am

This is probably a dumb question but here goes. The Vne speed for my 67 260B is currently a little over 200mph. I understand there is a mod that could be performed to bring Vne back up to the original spec of 227mph (if I remember correctly), what is that mod? Is this Vne speed IAS or TAS? If IAS, then does that mean that at higher altitutes one could fly well over 200mph TAS?

Tim,

VNE speed is "indicated" airspeed.

Try calling LoPresti Speed Merchants. I think they have a STC or Mod for raising the VNE. I believe it involves putting on Weighted Tips on your horizantal stabilizer. I think they look cool. FWIW.

LoPresti has the mod... it is a pair of counter weights that are mounted on the stabilator. I owned a 260B that had the Piper mod... Vne was 227.... If I recall correctly you also need counter weights on the vertical fin.

I did find that in decents from altititude that in smooth air, I could bet above the 203 mph Vne... the mod never showed any sign of flutter... from time to time, I have seen the mod parts on ebay... you might keep an eye out there too.

All the best!
Jim
