sun visor for 1962 comanche 180

Postby Terry Hallett » Thu Jul 28, 2011 9:28 pm

Just purchased air craft. It did not come with sun visors. Based on other posts, I ordered the Rosen sunvisors. I can not see how to install these visors. I called tech support and they said they were replacement visors for a/c that already had visors. Does any one have a suggestion on which sunvisors to purchase and how to install? Thank you

Terry,

Welcome to Comanche ownership. Look for a post from soon to be Pres Zach Grant he has a 180 and a Twin and can likely answer.

Are there holes for screws at the left and right ends of the metal trim on top of the windshield? If so, someone probably removed the old sunvisors. I have never seen a Comanche without sunvisors. If you locate the holes, read the install instructions while sitting in the cockpit, with the new bracketts in hand, and follow them step by step. It has been a while since I installed mine but as I remember it was very easy job.

There are a total of 6 bolts that hold in the windshield. There is only one to the far left or right. The other 4 are spaced evenly along the windshield. Do you have a picture of your instalation?

I believe visors were an option when 180s were new. You might find a cheap automotive plastic visor that would clip to the top windscreen retaining piece, or use stick on sun screen along the top third of the windscreen. (Yours is two piece). And of course sunglasses.

I doubt the Rosens will work without costly modification. You might consider returning them.

I installed Rosen visors on my 1964 PA30. I think I still have the old Piper visors somewhere in the hangar. My memory (dim!) was that the Rosen visors pretty much used the same bolt spacing as the old Piper visors, but I'm not certain. I will look for them today and try to check the mounting hardware. If you will send me a phone number or email address I will get back to you to describe what I have. If they fit, I will send them to you.

The Rosen's do use the exact same mounting holes that the Piper one's do.

Tom,

I think Terry said he had no holes. That was the issue that started this discussion.

Terry: I found my old visors in the hangar today. They have brackets that fit under the head of the bolts in the windshield frame. The first bracket goes on the first bolt hole away from the center line of the airplane. This bolt is approx. 1 3/4" off the center line at the top of the windshield. The other bracket fits on a similar bolt located about 13" from the first bracket. The brackets are such that they can be adjusted left or right a bit to fit the approximate spacing numbers discussed above.

The visors are in good shape, off white in color.

Terry: I found the visors from my 1964 PA30 today. They mount with brackets held by the bolts that are in the metal frame around the plastic windshield. The first bolt bracket is about 1 3/4 " away from the center line of the airplane and the other bracket fits on a bolt that is about 13 " away from the first bracket. If you have bolts in your windshield frame, I would think they would be common to all the Comanche series??? If you don't have holes in your windshield frame, they could be added, but I didn't look on the outside of the airplane to see if there would be a problem to do this. The brackets on the visors have quite a lot of endo adjustment that would accomodate variances from the approximate measurement figures give above.

The visors are an off white color. Let me know if they will work for you.

I do have 6 bolts at the top of the windscreen. From your decription, I may be able to the use the mounting hardware from these visors. I sent email with contact info.
Thanks
