Led Landing light replacements

Postby md11flyer » Wed Mar 02, 2011 4:56 pm

Hello:
Does anybody have any recommndations as to replacement landing lights?
I am tired of changing out the quartz landing lights that burn out quite frequently..ie taking off
the tip tanks..
I use my lights more often than the average flyer so they burn out on a regular basis. The lights are on from cleared
for takeoff till clear of runway.
There are several makes of led replacements bulbs that claim long life and brighter lights.

Just wondering if anybody has researched this before.

Thanks,
Gary

There are several options available. A few years ago, I went with the Knots 2 U HID landing lights. They light up the world very nicely. They are guaranteed for as long as you own your airplane. LED lights are also coming on line now, don't know if anyone has installed them in a Comanche or not.

I installed the Whalen LED in January. It is comparable with the HID on the other wing tip. It lights up faster than the HID as well. I would say they will be the future in aviation lighting for sure.

Hi Gary,

I have a PA-24-260.

I had the HID (High Intensity Discharge Light Kit installed by Knots 2U in January 2010. They are approved and absoutely fantastic! They are not cheap though. Fly away price was $1451.96, but well worth it.

I live close enough to Burlington, WI, (where they are located), and had them installed on the spot. Great peope too.

They are guranteed for as long as you own the airplane.

I leave them on all the time, and at night, they great for taxiing. There is no comparison to the old lights.

Just type Knots 2U in your browser, and go from there.

Thanks for the responses.

Talked to Keven at Knots2u and confirmed they are indeed STC'd for the Pa-30/Pa-24 line.
Put the order in and will receive then shortly. I live in Canada so with the canadian sales tax tacked on at the border and the
(tell me why I need to pay brokerage fees for duty free articles) brokerage fees of around 75 dollars, the cost in hand is around
US 1380. Yeah not cheap but if I scare just 1 bird or even 1 real bird out of my way then they pay for themselves in spades!

A big bonus is I can turn them on whenever I fly without any thought as to the dreaded ,take the wing tanks off, frequent bulb replacements.

Just another safety feature that gets a wallet approval along with the seatbelt airbags, before any extra funds go to the paint job fund!

I still have 2 Halogens on the shelf. I replace them about every 2 years/150h.

There is "kit" that I installed years ago, to enable changing the landing lights without removing the tip tanks.
A simple, weekend project.

I installed the Whelen from Knots 2U. It says on their website they are FAA approved. I love love them. Brighter than the incodescent but not near as bright as HID. HID more expensive and more complicated install process. I have heard that the transformer units on the HID will go out after a period of time. LED very loow drain on electrical system, could leave on all the time if you desired and great longevity.
