Landing lights LED

Postby Wayne Braden » Sat Nov 23, 2013 3:31 pm

Need info for LED for landing lights. Do I need STC to replace standard lights and is it remove and replace?

Wayne,

I can speak to the way it was for the Whelen LEDs I put in my Twin. They were remove/replace drop ins that were FAA/PMA'd. This may or may not be true for whatever model you fly - best to read the fine print.

The Whelen tail beacon was under the same STC for the Whelen 1970 rotating beacon but with an updated list fit was an issue (see other posts on this one)

Wayne,

FYI,

I installed the ALPHA LIGHTS purchased from Aircraft Spruce a couple of months ago. The paperwork that came with them said it didn't need a STC or 337 Form. Just a log book entry. Check out there website for more information. They are considered a drop in replacement for the PAR 36 type of lights we have on our aircraft. FWIW.

Jim,

I installed the Alpha Lights. I got them from Aircraft Spruce. They were about $10.00 during their once a year sale. Just do a Google search and it should show the company website with the product information.

They were discounted $10.00 each off the retail price.

After 4 posts... I would have thought that they would have given them to you for more that $10 off... you are one hell of a promotional guy!

Try AeroLeds. I bought landing, position & strobes - all direct replacements. I can't say enough about the lights and the customer service I received. To get the best price, you'll need to purchase through a vendor (I used Gulf Coast Avionics) and have them dropped shipped from AeroLeds.

This is a bit late, but if no decision yet on the LED Landing lights, AeroLEDS are great. They are PMS/STC and ready to place with minimal wiring. There are wig-wag options which I highly recommend unless you already have a Pulslight module, which is what I have.

Has anyone installed the "ALPHA BEAM PAR36" LED lights in the their PA-30? I have tip tanks and they need to be removed to install the landing lights just inboard of the tip tanks. Not something I look forward to on a regular basis. I understand they are a direct replacement for the 4509s.

Thanks, Jeff N8203Y

To Jeff,

I have them installed on my twin. They seem to be just fine. They went in with no problems, just like switching a light bulb. I've had them installed for about a year now. I also have the precise flight pulse light system and it also works fine. The plane does not have tip tanks. I just made a log book entry when I replace the lights. I purchased them from aircraft spruce. I also have the same light on the nose. Again no problems.

Thank you Jeff,

If the tips are a real hassle to R&R I will have to bite the bullet with the expensive bulbs.

Best wishes, Jeff
