1960 PA-24-250 Alternate Static Source

Postby William Hughes » Thu Aug 28, 2014 11:52 pm

This aircraft is flying in Canada and I am intent on adding an alternate static source with nice clean paperwork. I have been unsuccessful in finding any kind of certified kit or what have you for this aircraft. Any thoughts on this?

Hmmm. I have seen this on other Comanches but don't know how they got it.

Ours was done years ago as a minor modification. Log book entry only. The AP tapped into the static line and put a fuel drain valve in the panel labeled "Static Vent" This is a US airplane.

I have one on my 1968 "B" model Twin. I thought (assumed) it was standard. It's a small valve located just under the lower edge of the switch panel to the left of the throttle quadrant.

My aircraft (1969 260C) has one on the lower right side of the throttle quadrant, seems to be original.
See pictures.
I don't know if it works or not, because in my previous aircraft when you opened or closed it the VSI needle moved, and this one doesn't do a thing!

Andres, If the VSI or altimeter do not jump a little it is not working. It could be always closed or always open.

I assumed the test was done while airborne.

No, it was down as part of the pre flight while on the ground!

I needs to be done while in flight. It is the speed of the aircraft that creates the pressure difference between the external static ports and the internal aux static port.

Makes sense and I will try in flight. Why did it work in the Cessna 210 and 182 on the ground? Different system?

If the VSI or Altimeter does not move when you open there alternate static, then it could also mean that you have a serious static leak. It is unlikely that the alternate static source is not working, but stranger things have happened,

William, I have a 61 250 and looked into this before. There is no STC that I found; the best I could tell it would need to be installed under with a 337.
