Bungie Replacement (PA-30)

Postby David Pfeffer » Wed Oct 10, 2012 2:52 pm

Hey,
New PA-30 owner. I'm an A&P, but haven't changed out the bungies on a Comanche before. Need to do so at annual. I researched the forum and was surprised to not see a whole lot on it. Maybe it's just that simple! I read many members (slowly) cut the bungies to remove them (10 or so strands at a time). I just ordered the Boger Aviation tool, so that's a start.

Does everyone swap them out while gear down, or partially retract to bring the pulleys closer together? How do you get the bungie off the tool when back on?

I guess the short answer question is does anyone have a mini tutorial for bungie cord replacement in the PA-30?

I probably should just wait until the tool arrives. There may be half descent instructions in it...

Thanks!
David

Actually, at 14 degrees retracted, the bungees are at max stretch. That is the easy way to remove them, stretch them, insert the brace, extend the gear, pop the bungee off the bell crank, and unscrew the pully outboard by twisting the brace. Use the lever tool, to remove the bungee from the brace, remove the pully from the bungee, install the pully on the new bungee, then use the lever tool to install the new bungee on the brace. Twist the entire assembly in the bay to seat the pully bolt, then set the bungee over the bell crank. Retract the gear to max stretch. Remove brace...repeat other side. 1 hr total time for both sides allows for very leasurly pace, and a learning curve. The bogert tool has the directions on how to use it. You will find it is very easy with the only two gotchas. First, the pully must sit square on the end of the brace to be able to get the bolt started. Second, the bolt may not be captured very well by the pully bracket and may be able to turn. You may need to crimp the bracket or add some redneck repair type tape to the assembly to get it to turn properly and go in the hole....hope this helps.

Call Webco say "Bungees" give your address and CC # and they're on their way to you, no need for part #. Ray B
