Bungee replacement.

Is the bungee replacement a owner maintenance, like an oil change? I have the tools but don't know if I need an AP sign off.

William,

At the Clifton Maintenance Seminar run by CPTP, Comanche Pilot Training Program, Inc. they gave us a list of stuff we can do. Bungees were described as replacing elastic shock absorber cords on landing gear. My interpretation of that is bungees is something we can do - like changes tires under item c. Preventive Maintenance item 2.

They did carefully say the list was for reference only and the current info would be at FAR 43, APP.

If you are going to replace bungees, get a Comanche specific bungee tool and get some instruction the first time you do it. Get that instruction from someone who knows the Comanche, as your average mechanic will not know the correct sequence and will not know what to check. There are also too many mechanics who think it is a dandy idea to cut the old bungees to remove them. Granted, that is quick and easy. In fact, it is perfect if you don't mind inside out dents in the top of the wing.

Well, I admit I am one of the heretics that cuts the bungee. But first, I wrap a heavy towel over the top to absorb energy from any recoil. Works great for me, and a heck of a lot faster than using the tool for removal.

Going to work on a compressed grease design tool for my next installation though. I hate turning that nut a quarter turn at a time!

Also, by pulling the inboard clevis bolt at the side brace stud, you can swing the main up and down. That allows you to stretch the bungee, insert the holder, and then by pushing the gear all the way up, just slide the bungee off arm. This would be nearly as fast or faster than taking the time to position a towel and then sawing through the bungee with no risk of damage.
