UI have a main strut on my 1959 comanache 180 leaking . I have rust on my chrome tube and assume that might be the culprit ? Tearing the seals as it compresses ? Any suggestions? Replacing chrome tube very expensive used if can find one .  Craig 16419

Craig, at this point you have a chrome repair ahead of you, most likely.

Let me suggest a practice for the future. Before flight, take a cloth or a paper towel and smear fresh hydraulic fluid on the oleo, wipe it clean, then another swipe. This way, as you taxi, and the oleos ride upand down, they are lubricated and will slide against the O rings. Otherwise the oleo will grab the O ring and wear a flat side to it, or even make it turn in place. The result is that you end up with a hydraulic oil leak.

If your oleos are pitted, then you need to have them rechromed. If you decide to do this, there is a company that has an approved procedure and let me know and I'll find the company's details.  My email is 26981@att.net

Hi,

We have used United Plating Works in the past.  They are a FAA Approved Repair Station.

United Plating Works
4118 North Mingo Rd.
Tulsa OK 74116-5026

918-835-4683

Attached is the Piper drawing showing dimensions.  They should know this, but I always send it a long with the tubes.  I have not had any done in the past couple of years.  They used to be around $400.00 each.  They do take a while to get back, though.  So be sure to ask how long it will take.

You could also call Webco.  Sometimes they have them in stock on an exchange basis.

Also call BAS Parts Sales and see if they have any used ones.  https://www.baspartsales.com/

We have also found them there in the past.

Sounds good. Please do not throw your old ones out.  You may want to get them chromed or just keep them and eventually somebody will need them.  Or put them on Ebay.
