Hi all – First post here and looking for some guidance on a purchase of a 1960 250. My mission is to travel with my two young boys as they grow up and go on adventures together. My home airport is KPWK (Chicago Exec – Palwaukee). I’m currently just about to finish up my PPL and plan to get an instrument rating shortly afterward. I’d like to travel the Midwest mostly but occasionally fly down to Dallas and Denver to visit family. I feel like a Comanche fits the bill on my budget, but I have no idea how gauge a fair price from listing on Controller or Trade A Plane. I’m a commercial real investor guy and understand how to value a property but a total rookie for aircraft. I understand it an be complicated especially when buying a vintage aircraft like something from the early 60s. I have my eye on this listing and am wondering if anyone could chime in with their experience and opinion – a stretch for pilots right?

I’m interested in this one because I feel like it may fit my budget and it’s currently owned by an A&P which gives me comfort that it’s being taken care of. What do you all think about the value and price for this listing?

Gary:

I see the most variation in aircraft pricing with the avionics.  It can seem odd but the panel is usually worth more than the entire aircraft.

Also, the high value approach is to determine the features you need, and buy them installed on an airframe.  In other words, buy the aircraft you want right up front.  Purchasing an older aircraft and upgrading will not save you money.
