Gear Indicator Wiring Diagram

Postby Richard Lanning » Wed Sep 24, 2014 3:42 pm

Anyone have a wiring diagram for a two position gear indicator system that uses the iris type indicators? Mine are inappropriately wired into the navigation dimmer switch. Since the resistor has gone in the rheostat I have no indications at night with the nav lights on.

Rather than replace the resistor I figure I might as well get these indicators wired up properly.

Thanks

Richard,

If Comanche and gear are used in the same sentence, I always start with Matt's website at http://www.comanchegear.com/

I second that. Matt is the Oracle of all things Comanche Gear related. Many helpful pics on his website of the gear wiring and related things. In rebuilding my gear I realized the brake lines were routed incorrectly and set it correct thanks to Matt's pics in conjunction with the IPC and Service Manual. The left and right side brake lines are routed differently by design.

Thanks. Nothing on his website that I could find since my plane is an antique (1959). I dropped him a note. Will let you know how things turn out.

Thanks everyone. Matt got right back to me with a wiring diagram.

Hopefully I can easily figure out how my system is currently wired and get it corrected.

I installed Matt's complete wiring kits and just replaced everything. Cliff Wilewski and his team at Heritage did this for me during the pre-buy which I turned into a complete Annual once I agree to buy the plane. Worth every penny (Matt's kits & Cliff's team) IMHO. The previous owner told me that "sometimes the gear light doesn't come on but you just need to jiggle the panel lights rheostat".... Hmmm that didn't sound good and Cliff confirmed some of the wiring was falling apart. Options were repair broken / sketcy wires or just replace it all. I figured if one wire in the bundle was in bad shape the others weren't far behind and landing gear is something I wanted 100% confidence in so I replaced it with Matt's kits and micro-switches. Really good stuff!

I echo Charles' comments - I've replaced all of my gear switches and harnesses with Matt's kit, had Matt overhaul my gear motor and transmission and installed the new Webco conduits, and just recently installed Matt's kits to convert the old indicator lights to new Mil-Spec push-to-test units that bypass the dimmer completely. Well worth the $$$!

Yeah, I suspect my wiring is due for a change out. Will add it to the list. Too many other priorities ahead of wiring right now.

I am putting in Whelen tip strobe lights so I'll have some new wiring in the plane. :)
