vent window during flight?

Postby Quint Van Deman » Wed Dec 26, 2012 6:23 am

Fellow Comanche owners--

Is it a) possible or b) advisable to open the vent window during flight for photography purposes?

Thanks,

-Quint

I open it all the time. Makes noise, but nothing else.

Another reason to occasionally open the vent window is that when the window is opened, the cabin will become slightly negative. If you VSI jumps initially when the vent window is opend, then you have a static system leak!!!

It also helps to open the little window when you need to close the cabin door in flight. Closing the door is now on the checklist.:-)

Just make sure you have your camera firmly attached to your wrist with the wrist strap. Seriously.

Also very good for smoke removal. And for emptying a water bottle real quick... in case you need an empty water
bottle real quick... :D

When my kids were little they loved my magic trick of holding a piece of popcorn about a foot from the open window. you let go and "poof" it disappears. Always wondered if someone on the ground every saw one piece of popcorn falling mysteriously out of the sky.

Seriously, opening the vent window is just a little noisy and your VSI will vibrate a some. But like stated earlier, if you put anything near it, hold on, or it is gone!

Kelly - too funny - I can just see the awed faces of your kids. Nice visual.

In terms of holding on to stuff. A Baron friend had his wife's custom super lightweight air race jacket get sucked out over Missouri. Three years later, they get a call - it was sun bleached but it had been found in a field and they googled the name on the jacket. Found them in Texas and returned the jacket.

Perhaps the finder of the popcorn pieces thought passengers above were watching movies, eating popcorn ...
