Stabilator rivets cracks

Postby Steve Smith » Fri Jun 17, 2011 3:09 am

I just noticed some very small cracks emanating from a few rivets on the upper surface of the stabilator on my 260. I'm not sure if the cracks are completely through the skin or just in the paint, but they are tiny. Has anyone experienced this before?

I've heard about them in the wings but not in the stab before - I hope others weigh in.

I have not seen any cracks around the rivets in the stabilator. However the plane had about a half dozen rivets that became loose. You can tell a loose rivet by tapping the metal skin around the rivet. If you get a thud sound the rivet is tight. If you get a tinny sound the rivet is loose. The loose rivets were replaced. Loose rivets might lead to cracks.
