New paint

Postby Nick » Sat Feb 21, 2009 2:38 pm

I have concluded that people who fly are dreamers, but they eventually make their dreams come true. First they dream of flying, then learn to fly. Next they dream of owning an airplane, then somehow eventually accomplish it. Then all they do is dream of ways to spend money on their airplane. My dream presently is new paint. I live in central Texas. Anyone have a comment or recommendation on a good paint shop in Texas or southern Oklahoma that does really quality work at a fair price? [I've been told about the shop in Brady and a guy north of Fort Worth at Northwest.] I want to conisder all of my options before I take the plunge on this. Thanks.

painting

Postby Don Oltman » Sat Feb 21, 2009 3:03 pm

I just was quoted 8700 by Ada aircraft painting a couple of weeks ago. On the same day Desapi quoted me 15,500, go figure. I'm right in the middle of the 1000 hr (Matt Kurke style) and neither of them seemed to care about giving me a break even though the gear and wells would already be completed.

Hi Nick,

Don't know if you've read your Feb Flyer yet but my article about getting my Twin painted is in there and might provide some help in selecting a shop. Also I blogged on it in this Forum at http://www.comancheflyer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4964

I am based at NW Regional and visited the GLO paint shop. My hangar neighbor had his painted at GLO and it made me glad I went to DESAPI ... but my goals may be different than yours. I had my plane painted at DESAPI for all the reasons I mentioned in the paint article ... and we lived with my brother in law in Ohio so there was more than one agenda in play at this selection.

I heard murmer in Houston did a great job but I have no experience but it has changed hands so check carefully.

Best of luck and let me know if you come to 52F - I'm in hangar 5 east side of the field.

Pat

My airplane was painted at Aero Mod in Midland about 9 years ago. Paint still looks great.

Paint

Postby Dan Johnson » Sun Feb 22, 2009 1:33 am

Nick,
Texas Aero Color in Brady has a nice facility and from what I have seen Alan does excellent work. He quoted me 10k a couple of years ago and a friend of mine just got quoted the same recently. I understand he does have a waiting list though. I tried to save some money and had my plane painted at Devine for a quote of $6,700. After all the extras it cost 10k (wing root seals, fiberglass repairs, stainless fasteners, new nav light indicators, new landing light lenses, etc. etc). I also had to take it back to them for partial repaint as I wasn't happy with the first go round. I would recommend Brady as a good close proximity paint shop.
Where are you located? I am in Lampasas.
Good luck,
Dan

Dan, appreciate the reply. I'm over in Waco. I had two recommendations for the shop in Brady before I started this posting. I had also heard "stories" about the shop at Devine. I will leave it at that. It will be a while yet until I can afford to do this. The primary thing I am being told is to be sure that the quote is for a "complete job" in order to avoid the issues you ran into where there are extra charges here and there that evetnually run the original price up well beyond the original price.

Hi Nick,
You are absolutely correct. Get a complete job quote. Stop by sometime and we can talk some more.
