    Hello All,

I’m having landing gear problems and my local maintenance guys are stumped. I’m calling in the big guns (you) to see if this sounds familiar, or if you have a suggestion.

    PA-24-260B, 24-4796, LoPresti Cowl

While in flight, below gear extension speed, gear selector is placed in down position; however, gear does not immediately extend and there are no signs that it is attempting to go down. Sometimes it finally comes down a minute later, sometimes it takes more time. When the lowering sequence does start, it progresses normally. Cycling the switch, when the gear are retracted, doesn’t produce any noticeable results. While the gear switch is down and the gear have yet to extend, the warning horn is audible when power is reduced. Problem has not been able to be reproduced on jacks after multiple attempts. The only hardware that has been replaced in an attempt to solve this issue was the main gear switch since the maintenance guys here are at a loss for any other explanation. Also, gear retraction in flight has had no issues. No recent maintenance has been conducted on the gear that may point to the cause. The problem was very intermittent about a year ago, but now it is happening on almost every flight. So far the landing gear always, eventually, comes down, but I’m ready for the emergency gear extension procedure to be needed at some point soon.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Kris,
you may want to ask Matt Kurke at Comanchegear.com. He’s very knowledgeable in this department and may give you a good troubleshooting method to figure out the problem.

    Kris:

The gear motor is activated by a solenoid. The switch on the console is actually wired to a coil on that solenoid. That coil closes the contacts that directs the high current required to the gear motor. If the switch contacts were getting worn or dirty that might result in what you are seeing. There are several other contacts and switches along the way that might also be causing this. The solenoid itself might also be getting worn, or have corroded and dirty contacts, that might result in erratic operation.

I kept tripping my breaker when I retracted. Pulled the seats and saw my little gear motor was spark arcing causing my breaker to pop. Changed out the motor, for $700 with a rebuilt.

After watching the gear retraction sequence and giving it some careful thought I finally tracked down the problem. Turns out it was one of three relays associated with the LoPersti cowl. Those little buggars were installed in a module next to the gear motor and a breeze to replace. A special thanks to the LoPresti team for working with me to track down the issue.
