I realize this is the definition of an ‘it depends’ question; however, here I go.  I see some on-line Twinkies that have gear up damage history.  Aside from eternal discount to value, what have folks experienced with post gear up planes?

Hello,

I have been an aircraft appraiser for many years and I have seen many aircraft with damage history.  It is becoming more difficult to find older aircraft that have had no damage history.  Given a choice, a buyer would prefer an aircraft with no damage history and depending on the age and model, damage history affects values in differing amounts.  I believe most importantly you need to look at who and how the repairs were made and what damage occurred. The repair documentation needs to be stated and recorded properly and in line with the repairs referenced by the manufacturer.  In most cases, the skin is damaged on the underside of the aircraft, which can be repaired and painted.  Engine stoppage or if the propellers were damaged, the engine case will have to be opened and inspected.  My experience has been that many owners use this opportunity to overhaul the engines and replace the propellers.  If you are unable to inspect all of these documents, hire someone that is familiar with the repairs being made.

Good luck,  Jeff Matar

Thank you, Jeff.  I assume the main wing spar is usually unaffected?
