Hello, I was wondering if anyone has a copy of the STC for the 5″ nosewheel STC. It was done by a gentleman who has since passed on in FL.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My information is that they are Harlan Asso. of Spruce Creek 386 405 6447.

The good new is the phone number is not disconnected. I left my info, as I’m looking to see if they have a record of my PA24-180 as I don’t have all the logs.

Same for me… would be great to put a 15″ up front instead of the 18″.

I will be doing my annual in October and plan to have mechanic fill out 337 and get a field approval.

    William,

Do you have a copy of the language that your mechanic used for the 337? I would like to do the same. Please email to n922jm@gmail.com

    Thanks!

I was under the impression that there was an STC, but the only one I could find was for PA30 and AP39 twins; STC SA1446NM-S. I’m guessing the single Comanche guys just started to adapt this (maybe they did a field approval)… After talking to experienced Comanche pilots and Comanche Pilot Proficiency Program instructors, they claim that they small vs. large tire will not create a handling difference. There was mention that the smaller nose wheel can change the airflow in the wheel well leading to higher temps on the rear cylinders on the 250/260s.

    Here what I can measure:
All tires “properly inflated” @ exactly 27 PSI, struts neutral and even.
15 6×6 radius measured from a flat surface to axle center – 6 1/2 inches
    Std 6 x 6 radius – 7 5/8 inches
Careful measurement shows Larger tire increases the angle of attack 1.2 degrees.

I post on the forum but have learned that you get quicker response using “Technical Questions” under the “Technical Info” tab…

Note, there is another measurement that I forgot to mention. According to Condor Aircraft Tires: 15×6.00-6 weighs 7.2 lbs, while the 6.00×6 weighs 8.9 lbs…

It’s sad that you have to use the “Technical Questions” when under the Technical Info tab they ask you to post your questions here!

Two little bits of food for thought.

The smaller nose tire will cause more drag in flight as it does not fill the open space of the nose as much as the larger tire.

Also, the TCDS spceifies only the 4-ply 6.00-6, Type III tire with a regular tube for the 180s and 250s (see TCDS 206.a).

The 260 has both the 4-ply and 6-ply listed while the 400 has only the 6-ply.

Just FYI, the holder of the 15 inch nose tire is deceased, the company that held the STC was struck off about eight years ago due to annual payments to Florida not being paid, so the STC is unsupported. However, all of that is irrelevant now since it has been determined that using a 15" 6006 tire and tube is a minor alteration which can be signed off by an IA.
