How are folks complying with the 2017-06-03 for South Wind Heaters?
It's an exhaust pipe test requirement. The test is to determine if the exhaust is steel, and capable of rust. The procedure is to use a magnet - if the magnet sticks it is steel, and if it does not stick it is aluminum and the AD does not apply. Harold Haskins Inc has a great website and explains this, and why we have a test requirement.
Hartzell Engines owns Southwind, C and D, and Janitrol, and offers the purchase of an Inconel lined combustion chamber which is a different part number and the pressure decay test AD does not apply. In the meantime, you must do a biannual pressure decay test, or placard the heater as inoperative with a log book entry and a placard on the heater switch and don't use it.
Southwind is now owned by Hartzell Engine Technology now and is covered descriptively on their website. Hartzell achieved an AMOC so that the Southwind could be handled the same as the Janitrol, so go to the Hartzell Engines website and take a look.
I hope that this answers your question --- the basic answer is to do what folk have been doing for decades on their Janitrol Heaters - a pressure decay test or placard as inoperative or, as now is achievable, a replaced combustion chamber. The exhaust pipe AD is a one time test. I really recommend the Harold Haskins website - the ADs are all listed there so just read them through.
