SERVICE LETTER NO. 1280
ATA/JASC: 2720
SUBJECT: RUDDER PEDAL AND BAR ASSEMBLY INSPECTION
MODELS AFFECTED: SERIAL NUMBERS AFFECTED: All All
COMPLIANCE TIME: On a recurring basis, at an interval not to exceed 100 hours time in service
APPROVAL: The engineering aspects of this service document have been shown to comply with the applicable Federal Aviation Regulations and are FAA approved.
PURPOSE: The safe operation of the airplane requires the free movement of the rudder pedal and bar assembly throughout the entire range of motion. This service letter maintenance alert provides instructions to inspect for the presence of hose clamps, zip ties and other obstructions to the correct operation of the rudder controls.
INSTRUCTIONS:
NOTE: FAA Advisory Circular AC 20-106, “Aircraft Inspection for the General Aviation Aircraft Owner,” Section 2, “Cabin-Cockpit,” includes the statement: “Check operation of controls for possible interference, full travel, abnormal wear, or other defects.” This service letter expands on that guidance. This free FAA document is available for download from the FAA at: https://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/ advisory_circulars/. 1. Gain visual access to the rudder bar assembly and check for proper rudder control operation, as follows: a. Ensure that there are no hose clamps or zip ties (Ty-Raps) attached to the torque tubes of the rudder pedal and bar assembly. Verify the free and correct movement of the rudder pedal and bar assembly. b. Ensure that the routing of wiring, cables, and plumbing, and system components adjacent to the rudder controls, do not present a snagging hazard to, or interference with, the rudder controls. 2. Make a logbook entry documenting compliance with this service letter.
